    Drone bees operate through a combination of biological and behavioral mechanisms. They develop from unfertilized eggs via a process called arrhenotokous parthenogenesis, meaning they are haploid (having half the chromosomes of female bees). Their sole purpose is to locate and mate with a queen during her nuptial flight.

After successful mating, the drone dies due to abdominal rupture. If unsuccessful, they return to the hive and rely on worker bees for sustenance until expelled before winter.
